Blanche of Castile

Patronage, Piety, and Power

An exhibition for a mother, regent, and queen.

Blanche of Castile: Patronage, Piety, and Power at the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris gives one of medieval Europe's most important rulers the public recognition she is due. Located in the Sainte-Chapelle, the former royal chapel constructed during her lifetime, it transforms our understanding of the building as part of her legacy.

This exhibition reunites illuminated manuscripts, reliquaries in precious metals, rare armour, and historical documents from collections across Europe and America. The setting is the crown jewel of Blanche’s architectural patronage and symbolic programme. Paris collection objects are complimented with loans from museums across Europe and America within a single thematic frame: the life and legacy of one powerful woman.
